!Not Financial Advice!
Over the past few weeks there’s been a surge of hype around privacy-focused cryptocurrencies. The biggest short-term winner has been Zcash (ZEC), which has reportedly rallied 800%+ in a little over a month. Here’s my trade idea and thesis on ZEC.
I expect ZEC to be one of the hardest-bleeding coins in the coming bear market. With FOMO running hot, I think catching ATH will be tough. My plan is to start with a small short now, add if price pushes into $600–$650, and aim to close the position during a bear market phase around $100–$200 over the coming months.
Why I think ZEC is vulnerable
- Regulatory headwinds against privacy coins
Governments have pushed back on anonymity in crypto for years. Monero (XMR)—the long-time leader has faced sustained pressure and delistings on major exchanges. Few days ago ZEC market cap overtook XMR’s, it may cause attract similar scrutiny as a perceived tool for illicit flows, increasing the risk of future delistings on big exchanges.
- MiCA + AML “travel rule” dynamics (EU)
While MiCA doesn’t ban privacy coins outright, it ties into stricter AML frameworks. In practice, crypto transactions must be traceable, with sender/recipient data shared under the travel rule. That puts privacy coins at odds with the direction of regulation in Europe. There are already reports and signals that, by 2027, regulated EU platforms may stop offering such assets—potentially impacting XMR, ZEC, and similar coins.
- Market structure & network effects
Where anonymity is demanded most, XMR is deeply entrenched. Marketplaces and forums already have strong Monero integrations. Re-tooling those systems for ZEC is costly and unlikely unless there’s a compelling advantage—so I doubt ZEC will displace XMR in that specialized niche.
- Limited institutional appetite
Given the above, I don’t see large corporations or institutions getting meaningfully involved with ZEC. They’re more likely to stick to the majors (BTC, ETH, etc.) that better fit compliance frameworks and liquidity needs.
