During a trip to South Korea, an acquaintance I shared an Airbnb with, along with other friends, assaulted a young Korean woman on a night out. In his own words, he said, "I had my fingers inside this girl." She was inebriated and asleep while our group was singing in a karaoke room. The man is 36 years old and knew better. He spoke of his actions as if they were acceptable, apparently assuming that because we were close to him, we would tolerate it.
Throughout the rest of the trip, we were disgusted and shunned him. He is connected to many circles involving women, particularly in K-pop communities, including groups like Twice, NMIXX, and others. I am sharing this to help protect women in these spaces.
We never imagined someone we knew so closely could commit something so despicable, but the safety of others must come first. He is based in New York and frequently travels to Canada and other East Coast cities for shows. For those who know him, it may be hard to believe he could do this—but I felt it was essential to speak out, even if it strains existing relationships. The priority is keeping others safe.
